Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

What is CBT?

CBT is an evidence-based treatment that focuses on how thoughts and behaviors influence your feelings. It is a structured treatment that includes practice and homework outside of session.

What does CBT treat?

CBT treats many different challenges including mental health disorders, behavioral challenges, and life challenges. Some examples of what Dr. Porter treats with CBT include:

  • Anxiety disorders (social anxiety, phobias)

  • Depression and low mood

  • Relationship challenges

  • Grief

  • Adjusting to major life changes

How does it work?

CBT helps you identify patterns in your thinking and behavior. It helps you change these patterns through different techniques.

What to expect?

You will be asked to discuss present challenges, look for patterns, and complete homework outside of session. You will be asked to practice skills you are taught in session during your daily life.

What is the expected timeline of treatment?

Treatment timelines are specific to the person and the presenting challenges. CBT is often a shorter-term therapy.
